As old Christmas songs go, this one is relatively "new", with the music not being published until 1906, but the recorder quartet opening takes it back a few centuries. The recorder arrangement follows the traditional vocal arrangement and the chord progression fits it pretty closely as well, with just a few extensions, substitutions, pushes, etc. added to keep it interesting.
