about

The lead on this tune was played on my Native American flute. It's very natural to play the blues on this instrument; in fact, it's hard not to. Mainly, this is due to the design of the flute, being a 5-hole, pentatonic minor scale. I'm certainly not an expert on NAF, but I did my best to coax a few "extra" notes out of it.

I'm not that familiar with NAF tradition or practice. The melody just came from experimenting with the flute and stuck with me. The 12-bar chorus doesn't exactly follow the typical blues progression, but it works and sticks to the key of Am, fitting the flute. The accompaniment is definitely not traditional, drawing instead from the 'techno' and electronic folders, both in Band-in-a-Box styles and in the instrumentation in Reason. The bass is a synth bass from Subtractor. The drums are a mostly electronic kit I pieced together in the Kong drum designer. Most of the other sounds are a little more "normal" - Rhodes electric piano, strings, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar (though this is really a distorted synth lead). The solos after the middle break are EWI internal patches, one chorus from Patchman #91 "Electro" and two choruses from Patchman #31 "Fusion". I also included a little ear candy in the form of some rainstick and eagle samples - at the risk of added cheese factor. ;-)
