about

Released in December 2022, my tenth album is the third full length Flukutronic release, continuing this blend of flutes, ukuleles, and electronics.

This album was inspired by the arrival of my third grandchild, Gareth. May he, his sister, and cousin enjoy these songs now and as they grow up.

Technical Details:

Musically, all the pieces explore two concepts. The first is the idea of "setting" in relation to various flutes and ukuleles. All were composed with specific flutes in mind, all being Eb transposing instruments but having different ranges and fingering systems. This helps inform note choices, phrases, even preferred scales and keys. The melody of each piece is largely improvised but contained within a specific two chord sequence designed to explore a particular setting on that particular instrument.

The second concept is the use of "generative" techniques for many of the electronic parts, particularly synth pads and drum beats which were largely realized on the iPad in the AUM environment before transferring to Desktop Reason for mixing with acoustic instruments. All of the iPad parts were sequenced with MIDI sequencers that incorporated some degree of randomness either in note selection, timing/rhythm, or both. This generative approach also informed the organic flute, ukulele, and uke bass parts with a lot of "let's just see what happens" and allowing parts and combinations to emerge serendipitously.
